Robinson and Sun’s book goes in search of the neglected metaphorics of translation in pornography using poststructuralist rethinkings and reframings of porn (and masturbation) from Jacques Derrida to Judith Butler.
In his 1684 “Essay on Translated Verse,” the Earl of Roscommon attacked “want of decency” in translation metaphorically by comparing it to picking up prostitutes in the park (“raking the park for stews”) instead of hanging out with “troops of faultless nymphs.” Sex work, and the graphic representation of sex work that Nathaniel Butler was the first to call “pornography” in print in 1638, is used as a metaphor for non-normative translation, which in Robinson and Sun’s hands becomes experimental translation.
En route to that goal, the authors take us through Butler on performativity and resistance, Derrida on supplementarity and iterability, and Haun Saussy’s innovative application of Derridean citationality to the use of a target-cultural “sponsor” or “bondsman” for translation. They take detours through Charles Baudelaire’s “Une charogne” and J.G. Ballard’s “The Drowned Giant.”

Le français est probablement la langue la plus surveillée, réglementée et critiquée sur terre. Celui parlé au Québec et dans le reste de la francophonie canadienne l’est d’autant plus qu’il a longtemps été considéré comme le parent pauvre et fautif de la langue prétendument utilisée en toutes circonstances par une certaine élite de la société française.
Dans une vingtaine de textes illustrés de nombreux exemples, Pierre Calvé brosse un portrait aussi fidèle, réaliste et objectif que possible du français en tant que langue vivante et qui varie naturellement dans le temps, dans l’espace et dans la société. Les sujets abordés sont diversifiés et accessibles aux non spécialistes : les caractéristiques de la langue parlée au quotidien, les registres de langue, la remise en question des normes du « bon usage », les critères d’acceptabilité sociale et linguistique, les recommandations souvent discutables des « gardiens » de la langue, ainsi que des thèmes comme les anglicismes, l’insécurité linguistique et la complexité de l’orthographe.
Le français grandeur nature comble un vide entre les connaissances traditionnelles acquises lors de l’apprentissage scolaire du français (surtout écrit) et celles que devrait avoir tout francophone sur cette magnifique langue qu’est le français dans toute la richesse de sa diversité.

Avec près de mille entrées, ce livre sans équivalent est devenu un ouvrage de référence. Emplois fautifs, abus de sens, néologismes ou anglicismes : aux difficultés les plus variées, les linguistes du Quai Conti apportent des explications claires et argumentées.
Les multiples interrogations sur l’omniprésence d’un vocabulaire technologique ou sur l’irruption de mots étrangers, véhiculés par les médias et la mondialisation, trouvent ici des réponses passionnantes. Car l’Académie française, loin d’être un gendarme, est aussi attentive à la nécessité d’enrichissement de la langue qu’à la lutte contre l’appauvrissement du vocabulaire.
En se confrontant à des questions d’usage pratique, à des cas concrets et quotidiens, ce travail constitue un vif hommage à l’intelligence, à l’humour, aux subtilités, voire au génie de la langue française.

Face à la détérioration de la compréhension du français à l’école et dans l’enseignement supérieur, les auteurs appellent à la rescousse l’enseignement du latin pour tous les élèves dès le début du secondaire. Ils plaident pour une (ré)instauration de la maîtrise du français à partir de l’apprentissage des contrastes d’expression du sens entre le latin et le français.

À la différence de la perspective globale que se fixe ordinairement une grammaire, l’ouvrage opère une focalisation quelque peu innovante, en ce sens qu’elle tente d’échapper aux lieux communs de la vulgate traditionnelle, sur ce qui semble n’avoir jamais cessé d’alimenter le débat grammatical : une description substantielle et raisonnée des structures phrastiques complexes propres au français moderne.
À ce titre, l’ouvrage pourrait être utile à tout amateur de grammaire ou, plus généralement, de langue française, mais notamment aux publics qui entreprennent des études de lettres ou sciences du langage et se trouvent de la sorte être en quête d’une consolidation ou d’une réactualisation des acquis grammaticaux, assortie d’un dispositif d’entraînement.
