Dear Colleagues:

As already announced, the Tenth Cuba-Québec Symposium on Translation, Terminology and Interpretation will be held in Cuba on December 6, 7 and 8. Organized jointly by the Asociación Cubana de Traductores e Intérpretes (ACTI) and the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ), the symposium will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas on some very current issues:

  • Training and Professional Development
  • Working Conditions
  • New Technologies: Boon or Threat?
  • Courtroom Interpretation: A Matter of Freedom or Death
  • The Web and the Translation Market
  • Translation, a Source of Culture

Owing to circumstances beyond our control, we have decided to change the location of the symposium so that we can ensure ideal conditions for participants to exchange views on the above issues, but also fully benefit from their stay in the “Pearl of the Caribbean.” The symposium will therefore be held in the resort town of Varadero, at the beautiful Iberostar Playa Alameda hotel. This is a five-star, “all-included” hotel, which means that the price of your hotel room includes all of your meals, drinks and activities, both in the hotel and at the beach.

Registration

You can register through the secure OTTIAQ web site:
https://cotisation.ottiaq.org/meetings/Welcome.aspx

All those who work in the language field — professionals, researchers, members of professional associations or other related occupations — and who wish to present a paper at the symposium should submit a summary of no more than 250 words to the organizing committee at the e-mail addresses indicated below by August 31, 2016. The committee will study the proposals and respond to the authors by September 30, 2016. Release of a preliminary program is planned for October. The final program will be made available a few weeks prior to the event.

The official languages of the symposium are Spanish, French and English. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided thanks to the support of ACTI and the Equipo de Servicios de Traductores e Intérpretes (ESTI).

This year, interest in the symposium will be boosted by the attendance of the executive committee of the International Federation of Translators (FIT). In addition, the symposium will be an ideal opportunity for the annual meeting of the member associations of the FIT Latin America (FIT-LatAM) regional centre. These two events will allow the symposium attendees to discuss their concerns directly with the world’s highest translation, interpreting and terminology authorities.

To ensure the broadest distribution possible, please share this invitation with your translation, terminology and interpretation colleagues, as well as professional associations. The more numerous, diverse and representative the range of participants, the richer the debate and exchange on these topics so important to us will be. See you in Varadero in December 2016!
