Future mentors
Mentors are seasoned members, recognized by OTTIAQ, who share their knowledge and experience with candidates.
To become a mentor, you must meet certain criteria (see below). You must also take a short training offered by OTTIAQ’s staff, once your application is accepted. And you must take the training on ethics, professional conduct and professional practice if you have not done so already.
You will be matched with a candidate who has the same professional profile as you (translation or terminology), who works in the same language pairs, and, where possible, in the same fields.
Candidates can do the mentorship program through a university translation program recognized by the Order, in-house with a company, as self-employed professionals, through the Translation Bureau or through a co-op program. Mentors are not required to provide candidates with the required volume of work for the duration of the program. The company where the candidate is employed or doing a co-op internship will provide the texts. In other cases, mentors provide texts if they are practising their profession. If they are unable to provide texts, the Order will do so.

Criteria:
- Practise the same profession as the candidate
- Have a minimum of five years of relevant experience
- Have been registered on the roll of the Order for a minimum of five years
- Have never received a penalty other than the one mentioned in paragraph (a) of section 156 of the Professional Code from the disciplinary council of the Order or any other disciplinary body
- Have never been required by the board of directors, under the provisions of the Professional Code, to complete a period of refresher training or a refresher course or a restriction or suspension of your right to engage in professional activities
Role of mentors
- Share knowledge, experience and advice with candidates to help them develop autonomy and integrate the skills they have learned into a professional practice.
- Act as an evaluator by producing monthly evaluation reports (based on a sample of 1,000 words per month, chosen randomly out of the 5,000 words provided by the candidate).
At the end of the program, mentors must prepare a summary of the candidate’s ability to practise the profession in line with recognized standards and prepare an opinion for the Certification Committee in the month following the end of the program.
The Order estimates that 20 hours of mentorship is required over a period of six months to complete the program, with one meeting per month.

Mentor compensation
For mentoring candidates, OTTIAQ rewards mentors with $800 once they submit their final report.
