As metaphors are fascinating linguistic and cultural phenomena, and as they have a great potential to cause translation problems, it is no wonder that a great deal has been written about them, both in metaphor studies and in translation studies. They are severely under-researched from the perspective of audiovisual translation, however. This is surprising, considering the added layers of complexity caused by the multimodality of audiovisual texts, and the special conditions and constraints of dubbing and subtitling. This monograph seeks to remedy this, as it investigates how metaphors are handled in three different genres of televisual light entertainment. If a metaphor is verbalized in the dialogue while being visualized on screen, and if that metaphor is not normally used in the target language, the task of the audiovisual translator becomes very challenging indeed. The research shows that audiovisual translators go to great lengths of creativity and complexity to do metaphors justice and maintain harmony with sound and image.

La linguistique historique a connu depuis les années soixante-dix un renouveau majeur, s’inscrivant désormais dans le champ des sciences du langage, dont les apports sont venus enrichir des approches jusqu’alors très descriptives et largement philologiques. Les langues romanes, et le français en particulier, bénéficient comme peu de langues au monde d’une tradition écrite ininterrompue et très dense. Le développement d’outils et de procédures nécessaires au traitement de très gros corpus a contribué à ce renouveau, en permettant l’analyse plus fine et complexe d’un grand nombre de textes de genres très variés. D’où un nouvel éclairage sur des changements importants qu’une analyse moins précise n’avait pu évaluer et interpréter (ainsi du développement parallèle des démonstratifs, des déterminants et des pronoms personnels, ou des changements survenus dans l’ordre des mots) : leur chronologie s’en trouve affinée, et des relations de causalité postulées entre certains d’entre eux soumises à révision.
Cet ouvrage présente les grands changements qu’a connus la langue française depuis douze siècles dans les domaines phonétique, morphologique, syntaxique et sémantico-lexical. Il s’efforce de dégager les mécanismes sous-tendant ces changements et présente les spécificités du français au regard d’autres langues, en particulier les langues romanes. Il propose aussi, par la mise en évidence de mécanismes et processus de changement qui ne sont pas spécifiques au français, quelques éléments pour une meilleure compréhension du changement linguistique en tant que trait universel de la faculté du langage.

Le présent ouvrage se propose de montrer combien les Francs de la période mérovingienne ont eu une part importante dans la formation non seulement de la langue mais aussi et par là même de la culture française. La démarche adoptée ici ne sera pas historique mais linguistique et civilisationnelle, et tiendra compte du nombre élevé de mots issus du vieux francique occidental (la langue de Clovis) encore présents dans le français d’aujourd’hui.
Il ne sera donc pas question des conquêtes du premier roi de France, des luttes fratricides à la suite de sa mort, de ses desseins, de ses actes politiques et autres. Et cela vaudra également pour ses successeurs. Le cadre temporel restera, pour des raisons strictement linguistiques, cantonné à la période comprise entre 486 et 700.
De cette investigation, il ressortira essentiellement un fait culturel majeur, à savoir le rôle décisif des Francs Saliens dans la naissance de la féodalité, déjà larvée durant la fin du Bas-Empire romain.
Ce constat fondé sur l’étude du lexique vieux francique occidental, tel qu’on le trouve dans le français contemporain, constituera l’un des aspects « phare » de cet essai. Il permettra surtout de faire ressortir la permanence civilisationnelle de la France au moins jusqu’à la Révolution.

La plupart des manuels de mandarin proposent une langue standardisée pour l’apprentissage, qui n’est pas celle qui est réellement parlée par les Chinois dans la vie de tous les jours. Il est assumé qu’il suffit d’apprendre un lexique thématique de conversations courantes, et que l’immersion fera le reste… Pire, la véritable langue parlée est souvent considérée comme impropre à l’apprentissage scolaire, parce qu’elle peut utiliser des expressions familières, parfois même vulgaires, qui pourraient détourner l’étudiant de la recherche d’un style pur et soutenu. Pour de nombreux Chinois, il est même honteux ou impudique d’enseigner la langue de la rue à un étranger. Cette approche est cependant incomplète, et risque de décourager l’étudiant qui s’aperçoit qu’il a du mal à se faire comprendre dans un dialogue basique malgré un gros effort de travail. Même si l’on juge la langue parlée moins noble que la langue standard, sa maîtrise est la clef de la réussite de l’établissement de relations sociales en Chine, et un outil essentiel pour diminuer les frictions culturelles, particulièrement aiguës, qui se posent à tout étranger.
