Introduction to Legal Translation

Deadline for registration: September 16, 2025

This webinar is intended for generalists who would like to become more confident in translating the occasional legal text for their clients.

During the first half of the webinar, you will briefly learn about the legal systems in Canada, including the differences between common law and civil law, and some basic legal terminology. You will also learn how to perform basic legal research, using CanLII and other online tools, to help you with general legal translation projects.

During the second half of the webinar, you will discuss and translate a general legal text, such as an article about a current legal topic.

It is highly recommended that participants take this workshop before taking any other legal translation workshop.

Sabine Biasi is a certified translator for various language combinations and has over thirty years of experience in translation, including more than twenty-five years in legal translation from French to English. Fifteen years ago, after working as an in-house legal translator in the linguistic services departments of two major law firms in Montreal for more than ten years, she started her own legal translation business.

Her clients include many of Canada’s largest law firms, the legal services departments of several large corporations and various government agencies. Since 2020, she has also been a subject matter expert and course lecturer in the Graduate Diploma in Legal Translation program at McGill University.

Sabine holds an honours degree in French-to-English translation from Concordia University (co-op option) and a master’s degree in international business law from the University of Liverpool School of Law, both obtained with great distinction. She is a member of both OTTIAQ and CALT, the Canadian Association of Legal Translators. Since September 2019, she has served on the board of directors of CALT, where she is in charge of training, with a particular interest in the next generation of professional legal translators.
